Are Supplements Necessary?

One would think that supplements are an essential part of the American diet with all the media we are bombarded with each day. And then there are conflicting information suggesting that certain vitamins are bad for our healths. It is no wonder that most people are confused.

Here is my take on supplementation, I am not an expert. In an ideal world we would get all our nutrients from whole foods such as fresh meat, vegetables and fruits. But in today's society many of us are working over 12 hours a day and do not have time to make 3 decent meals a day.

There are proven supplements that prevent disease such as vitamin C preventing scurvy and fish oils for brain functions. But what about multivitamins and minerals? I would say that there is no harm in taking these if you are leading a busy lifestyle. With the average diet there will be missing nutrients, it is difficult to plan and get the variety of nutrients we need.

Is it possible to take too many vitamins? As long as you stick within the recommended doses then you should be ok. The body will excrete the water soluble vitamins and minerals. The only vitamins where the levels can build up in excess are the fat solubles ones, A, D, E and K but you would have to be taking large amounts to cause any problems.

My recommendations

Take a multivitamin every other day if you have a fairly balanced diet. Take a multivitamin everyday if you lead a busy lifestyle and if you are unable to get a decent serving of vegetables and fruits each day.
I would recommend everyone takes a fish oil supplement each day but make sure its a decent one with high levels of EPA.
To get the most out of your meals I would take probiotics and if your digestion is not very good then a digestive enzyme would help breakdown the food to be absorbed.
